ZONE FOR HOMES

<< Back to Main Campaigns page

NPH, in partnership with organizations and individuals throughout the Bay Area, has launched our regional campaign, Zone for Homes. The goal of the project is to increase affordable housing in Bay Area jurisdictions by increasing the supply of land zoned for affordable housing.

The State of California requires local jurisdictions to update their Housing Elements – plans in which jurisdictions assess their housing need and set forth how they will create housing to address this need. In the Bay Area, a new round of local Housing Elements are due on June 30, 2009, though only one-third of jurisdictions are on track to meet this deadline. These Housing Elements must comply with a number of new requirements, including the obligations to analyze and plan for the housing needs of extremely low-income residents, and to conduct in the first year of the new planning period the rezoning needed to meet the local housing need that was not accommodated during the last planning period.
