1. Income and Vehicle Ownership
b. Household
Size, Income and Vehicle Ownership
This set of data again shows that
lower income households own fewer vehicles. They also show that in the Bay
Area:
|
Observation |
Below the median
income, once households exceed one person, household size does not
have a large impact on vehicle ownership. |
|
|
|
|
Implication |
Minimum parking
requirements that increase as the number of bedrooms increases (as is
typical in many Bay Area cities), are less appropriate for housing
intended for households earning below median income. (Above median
income, increases in household size does tend to increase vehicles per
household. |

Excel
Spreadsheet - Income vs. Vehicle Ownership By HOUSEHOLD SIZE
How
to Use This Information:
The
charts and data on this page (also available below in an Excel spreadsheet) are
specific to the Bay Area and can be used in discussions with communities and
local governments/planning departments.
- You
can "right-click" in your browser on the chart, and
- Click
"Save Image As" to save the chart as a GIF file which you can use
in applications.
Otherwise,
download the Excel files which has both the chart and the table. Use the
appropriate income level as a fact in your applications and analyses. For example, a
city zoning code may require 2.25 spaces per two bedroom unit. However if
the unites are going to rent to households 60% of AMI, the vehicle ownership
rates of 3 and 4 + person households of 1.56 and 1.64 at that income level, may
make those parking requirements seem high.
