What is Fair Share?
To house the growing regional population, the Bay Area will need to add over 72,000 new homes affordable to lower income families from 1999-2006, according to the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG). ABAG assigns each city and county in the region its fair share of this regional need.
The housing element is the city or county’s plan for meeting its full housing need. Updating the local housing element is an opportunity to get local jurisdictions to: - dedicate more funding for affordable housing - change land use and zoning policies - adopt inclusionary zoning requiring all housing development to include a portion of homes that are affordable …and much more.
Who’s Working On It?
NPH’s Nine County Housing Advocacy Network and Greenbelt Alliance have been actively organizing and pursuing coalition work with faith-based organizations, environmentalists, and other allies. Although housing elements were due to be adopted by the end of 2001, most Bay Area cities are still in the updating process, so there are still opportunities to get involved in the campaign.
What Were the Outcomes?
On June 26, 2002, NPH and Greenbelt Alliance released the Bay Area Housing Crisis Report Card to spotlight which Bay Area cities are making a genuine effort to provide for a full spectrum of housing, and which are not. The Report Card also shows how local government actions could greatly increase the production of affordable housing.
