When I hear the phrase "affordable housing," quick on the heels of this gentle euphemism are images that paint an entirely different picture. Dreary Soviet-style tenements splattered with graffiti; lead-paint peeling play structures surrounded by crab grass; fortresses for poor people; homes that make prisons seem humane. But times have changed since such images were an overwhelming reality.
